Rebirth in the San Gabriel Mountains after a massive fire in 2012. The flowers and mountain scrub brush are now the tallest living things in the forest. The wildlife has yet to return in force leaving an eerie silence throughout the wilderness.

An abandoned windmill previously used to pump water to the surface from a deep well, supporting the Wall Street Mill. There are lots of old mining operations scattered throughout the Mojave Desert. You always have to keep an eye open for mines, wells and deep shafts when hiking in these areas.

Trekking 2 miles through the largest Joshua Tree forest in the world brought me to this spot. After looking back at my progress, I took a quick rest and was on my way again with snow continuing to threaten.

I scrambled up the 1st section of rocks then took a moment to look back at Cima Dome rising up from the desert floor. Note the colors on the desert scrub and snow flurries falling in the distance.

Teutonia Peak Wilderness, Mojave National Preserve, California
Nearing the summit of Teutonia Peak I came across a natural scenic vista looking out between 2 rocks. You can see the New York Mountains shrouded in snow clouds. I had less than .25 miles remaining to reach the summit.

Kessler Peak rises up in the distance as light snow falls in the Mojave Desert. The temperature had fallen into the low 20’s by this point.
